Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born in Cheltenham on 16 January 1988, the only child of an English mother who was a dancer and gymnast and a Jamaican father who was a musician. Her work has consistently garnered acclaim and has been described as "genre-bending", drawing on various genres including electronic music, trip hop, R&B, and avant-garde. After signing with Atlantic Records, she released the mixtape Caprisongs (2022). She then released the EP M3LL155X (2015) and took a four-year hiatus, after which she released her second studio album, Magdalene (2019). It was also nominated for that year's Mercury Prize. I very recently started to like water me - for some reason it didn’t click for a while but i think it’s such an emotional and hypnotic song now. i also love in time very very much - those two have been on repeat lately. glass & patron is such a unique and entrancing song - hearing the sped up verse for the first time was so mesmerising. it’s impossible for me to pick a single favourite song but ones that particularly stand out to me are kicks, give up, pendulum and two weeks. Holy terrain and cellophane were early favourites of mine and it wasn’t until this year that i really got into lp1, melissa and ep1/2, as well as caprisongs of course. i think i was initially drawn by her reference to mary magdalene and the art work but i don’t really remember. The first song i listened to by her was home with you which i actually found quite scary at the time lmao - to be fair i was 14 and hadn’t heard much music as experimental as hers at that point.
